2022, soil and acrylics on canvas, 26 x 40 x 1.5 in., SOLD
We all come from generational histories of familial and global events experienced over time. This rich, cultural inheritance can be correlated with the layered buildup of soil and rock strata that form the Earth’s surface. Our communities, as well as our own internal lives, reflect and parallel this progression of weathering, accrual and metamorphosis under pressure. These canvases were buried in Northeast Alabama soil and organic matter to collect mineral and mold impressions representing that ecological process. Transparent colors were added in many layers to build depth and reinforce the concept that our lives, like the planet’s crust, are constantly being challenged to respond, transform and renew. Commissioned by the Community Foundation of Northeast Alabama, this polyptich now hangs in their offices and references their donor organizations’ “Open Spaces Sacred Places” meditative gardens partnership.
