2010, mold and acrylics on canvas, 16 x 16 x 3/4 in.
This piece was created during an artist residency at the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology on the Oregon coast near Lincoln City. It is the result of planting an unprimed canvas under a driftwood log section found on the beach sand. It was “harvested” several weeks later, after microorganisms, mineral rust, and the elements had left their own self-portraits on the canvas. It was then cleaned, sterilized, stretched, painted on and coated for safe exhibition.
