"These pieces were created during a recent artist residency at Joshua Tree National Park in the deserts of southern California. Check out my blog with photos of my adventures during the six weeks I worked there. Some canvases I buried in desert soil and rocks for a few weeks to accumulate mold and mineral stains before "harvesting" them and sterilizing for painting and safe exhibition. All of these pieces incorporate my own photographic digital images of local plants, as well as of my own handmade paper pulped from ecology reports and sustainable development studies. The images were printed on thin layers of transparent acrylic medium and collaged onto the canvas. These finished pieces have become, in my imagination, a message to us from the local flora and fauna, reporting that they are here and will remain a part of our desert experience if we don't drive them out through careless stewardship of the earth.
